Todd Lockwood on Redgar[]
R is for Regdar
None of the prefab characters created for the launch of 3rd Edition D&D stirred up more controversy than Regdar (with the possible exception of the gnomes). The game designers wanted the iconic fighter to be a dwarf. Management (at some level) felt that the poster boy for the game ought to be human. I was sort of on management's side and insisted that he should be pan-ethnic. In the end, when a character needed to die in an illustration, it was Regdar. He suffered more ignominious deaths than any other...
Apart from that, I had one week to do this painting that would become the cardboard standee in game stores. I kept the size of the painting down in order to speed up the process, but knowing it would be blown up over 300%, I used a jeweler's loop to check the details of face and hands. I have never worked so tight, before or since.[1]
